Weber County residents are coming together on Saturday, April 27, for what is sure to be Utah’s largest celebration of World Tai Chi and Qigong Day. Free, interactive demonstrations begin 10:30 a.m. in the outdoor programming plaza at the Weber County Library’s Southwest branch in Roy, 2039 West 4000 South.
Tai Chi, often described as a moving meditation, is a series of gentle exercises that create harmony between the mind and the body. The ancient Chinese art has exploded in popularity with the growth of the Baby Boomer generation who practice it for improved strength, flexibility, aerobic conditioning and balance.
The Weber-Morgan Health Department has been sponsoring classes at various branches of the Weber County Library System as part of its arthritis and falls prevention programs for several years.
“We’ve recently discovered there are dozens of practitioners and several active Tai Chi communities within Weber County,” says Jessica Hardcastle. “We thought it would be fun to get them all together for World Tai Chi and Qigong Day.”
All are welcome to attend the free demonstrations and join in the fun. There will be opportunities to learn and try out the movements as well as meet with local residents who can attest to the health benefits of Tai Chi such as improved cardiovascular fitness, stability and lower blood pressure.
The event is a collaboration between Weber-Morgan Health Department, Weber County Library System, the Great Salt Lake Taijiquan Society and Artfully Balanced.
